UAE Criminalizes Support For Qatar On Social Media

On June 7, 2017, it was reported that the United Arab Emirates Prosecutor General Hamad Saif Al-Shamsi had declared that showing any sympathy for Qatar on social media was a cybercrime carrying a legal punishment. Shamsi warned that any pro-Qatari sentiment posted online could carry between three and fifteen years in prison, or at least 500,000 dirhams (or $136,000) in fines.
