On September 22, 2016, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) announced on one of its Telegram channels that the Al-Fida forum is resuming operation following an extended period of inactivity.
The announcement on GIMF’s Tech channel on Telegram
Al-Fida was established in July 2011 as the main outlet for publishing content from Al-Qaeda and its affiliates. Following the rift between Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS), however, the forum lost much of its status, and with time, became devoid of any quality or original content. On the other hand, Al-Fida’s competitor, Shumoukh Al-Islam, which eventually became ISIS’s official forum, gained momentum.
Nonetheless, in recent months, both forums experienced periods of inactivity after being targeted by cyberattacks, and their historic role as the main outlet for jihadi content has been greatly diminished with the adoption of social media and secure communication platforms like Telegram.
