Hamas Al-Aqsa TV – A Designated Terrorism Financing Organization – Maintains Accounts On Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, And Facebook, And Offers App For Android Devices, Apple iPhones, And iPads

March 21, 2017

On March 18, 2010, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV and designated it a terrorism financing organization. The actions taken by the U.S. Treasury Department freeze all assets held by Al-Aqsa TV under U.S. jurisdiction, and prohibits U.S. persons from engaging in any transactions with them. The Treasury Department stated that Al-Aqsa TV is financed and controlled by Hamas and that it serves as a primary Hamas media outlet that airs programs “designed to recruit children to become Hamas armed fighters and suicide bombers upon reaching adulthood.” It should be noted that U.S.-based online platforms are banned from hosting it.[1]

Nevertheless, Al-Aqsa TV is maintaining accounts in Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, and its app is available for both Android phones and iPhones. As of this writing, its Instagram account has over 7,400 posts and 302,000 followers;[2] on Twitter, it has approximately 388,000 followers;[3] and its YouTube channel has 2,659 subscribers.[4]

A March 16, 2017 Instagram post on its account promoted its app, which is available for download from Apple’s iTunes for iPhones and iPads and from Google Play for Android devices. It is also, according to the Instagram post, available for Windows phones.
