Anti-ISIS Facebook Pages Targeted Daily By ISIS Supporters, Attacks Orchestrated On Telegram

November 3, 2016

A pro-Islamic State (ISIS) Telegram channel named “Social Media Operations” orchestrates attacks on the Facebook pages of ISIS critics. For example, a recent attack on October 31 targeted an anti-ISIS group called “Da’ish [ISIS] under the microscope.” It appears that the posts in the group do not normally receive more than a handful of comments. However, the targeted attack yielded 68 pro-ISIS comments on one post. While the group posts exclusively in Arabic, the comments from the ISIS supporters that flooded its page were in English. The targeted post contained a quote from Ibn Hubayra, a 12th century scholar, about the duty of fighting the khawarij, a reference to ISIS and its members.

The comments left by ISIS supporters consist mostly of quotes from previously released ISIS content and from known ISIS figures such as late ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad Al-Adnani and ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.

The original incarnation of the “Social Media Operations” channel was called “Online Attack D’awah Operations,” and was created in February 2016 by a user named Abu Abdallah Al-Gharbawi. In addition to singling out Facebook pages to target, the Telegram channel promotes other ISIS channels and circulates ISIS content.
