On October 17, 2016, it was reported that 50 or more information technology firms based in Hyderabad, India had been hacked and brought down by Pakistani hackers. The Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) reported the breaches to the media.

The Pakistani hackers reportedly used servers based in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia to mask their identities and switched servers every five minutes, making it difficult for authorities to pinpoint their true location. Nonetheless, a group of white-hat hackers were able to trace the origin to Pakistan.

The hackers managed to halt all transactions and encrypt the firms’ data with ransomware. A ransom of 150,000 bitcoin (about $95 million) was demanded from one company. Most of the impacted firms were connected with India’s financial sector.
